Towards the end of last year, Professor Guy Claxton and TLO Limited agreed to train and assess a small group of very experienced Osiris Educational trainers to deliver an Introduction to Building Learning Power™ INSET.

On Friday 11th February 2011 this training was completed and Guy Claxton assessed all of the chosen presenters. We are pleased to announce that all 6 of the trainers passed the course, and are now licensed to deliver the Introduction to Building Learning Power ™ INSET.

Building Learning Power™ is a hugely successful programme developed by TLO on the basis of Guy Claxton’s work, which aims to help pupils become better learners. It is a whole-school solution to enable a young person to deal with problems ‘calmly, confidently and creatively’, which makes for happier pupils, and happier teachers.

Osiris Educational and TLO have joined forces to create this new opportunity for schools to learn about Building Learning Power.

As newly endorsed BLP trainer Brian Maydew states “BLP will … develop ‘successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens’ (according) to the QCDA aims for the secondary curriculum.

Osiris Educational has been approved by the government as one of the primary providers of synthetic phonics training for teachers and ours customers will be eligible to claim up to £3000 back!

Government approved training

Osiris Educational has been approved by the government as one of the primary providers of synthetic phonics training for teachers and ours customers will be eligible to claim up to £3000 back!

Schools Minister Nick Gibb has recently announced a phonics match funding scheme to help primary schools teach systematic synthetic phonics and drive up reading standards in the UK

Primary schools will be able to claim up to £3,000, if they match that phonics funding, to spend on materials which meet the Department for Education’s criteria for an effective phonics programme.

A catalogue of phonics resources – including approved phonics products for teachers and pupils and training for teachers – will be published by the Department of Education in September. Schools will decide which of the resources will help them to deliver high-quality phonics teaching for their pupils and will be able to buy products and training with the phonics match-funding any time up to March 2013.

The Government is introducing a new phonics-based screening check for six-year-olds so teachers can identify children not at the expected reading level and in need of extra support.

How does phonics match funding work?

It is easy to get your government funding for Osiris phonics products. Eligible schools can spend up to £6000 on phonics training/resources and claim back up to £3000.

Book a phonics INSET Osiris Educational

We will notify the funding provider of the details of your order.

The funding provider will verify that your school has sufficient funding available

We will invoice your school for the full cost of the training

Your school will then send a claim form + the INSET invoice to the funding provider

You will be then reimbursed 50% of the cost of the training!

Brenda Hobbins

In an exclusive interview, a leading inset provider reveals all:

Brenda Hobbins, Osiris Educational’s course and inset director, shares her views and passions on teaching and training and looks at the future of education.

Brenda has more than two decades’ experience in education and began her career as a teacher. After teaching in national and international schools, she left to follow her passion to drive change in education and so set up Osiris Educational with Stephen Cox.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I always wanted to teach. When I was a child at school myself, I remember watching my teacher take the register and thinking how exciting it looked. When I left school, I went on to complete my PGCE and began my first teaching post as a maths teacher at a secondary school in Warwickshire. I had a very forward-thinking approach and implemented a half-way curriculum for my Year 7 pupils. This involved limiting the number of different teachers they had in order to help with the transition from primary to secondary school. I strongly believe the teacher should take a pastoral role and further the personal development of students as well as their academic learning. I spent 3 years at the school and became a year head during my final year.

Tell me about your international teaching experience.

After leaving my first school, I went out to teach at an Egyptian school in Cairo. I headed up the International Department and spent 6 years there. Whilst in Cario, Stephen and I developed and implemented a PSE Programme, which we went on to develop further when we returned to England.

Why did you decide to set up a teacher training company?

My main passion is to drive change in education. Whilst I was a teacher, I don’t remember any training of any particular quality. When Osiris was first set up we were providing training for the PSE model and the business grew from there. All our sales were customer-led and insets started as a one off. Over the past decade, Osiris has grown to become one of the top independent teacher training companies in the country. We use over 200 of the best and most renowned trainers in Britain, including Dylan Wiliam, Guy Claxton, Robert Powell, Andy Griffith, Will Ord, Jaz Ampaw-Farr and Sue Palmer. If revolutionary ideas like Philosophy for Children and Outstanding Lessons were available as training when I was a teacher, I might not have left. I believe if we have better trained teachers they are more likely to stay in the profession, as it is the best job in the world.

What are your ‘passions’ in education?

I strongly believe children should be happy and treated as children and not adults-in-waiting. I think childhood should be fun and exciting and consider teaching to be something more than information giving. Children need to learn about interpreting and have a curiosity for knowledge and skills, and it is the teacher’s job to help with this. I fundamentally believe that what was right when we were children is not right for the children of today, therefore teachers need to constantly update their teaching styles and keep up to date with changes.

Why should teachers and people involved in education attend Osiris training?

Thousands of teachers have attended our inset training over the years and we always receive outstanding feedback. The main advantage of inset training is that everyone in the school receives the same training, meaning everyone can discuss and deeply embed the ideas. Here are some other advantages for attending Osiris inset programmes:

Bespoke training to suit your school’s specific needs

Access to the country’s top presenters

All staff receive the same training

A convenient location for all your staff

Costs may be shared by holding joint sessions with other schools

Costs for supply teaching and travel are cut

What courses can be offered as an inset?

We have such a huge selection of trainers we can provide any educational training no matter how specific or general. Our trainers have all worked in schools so can identify specific problems and areas and come up with practical solutions. We provide training for all nurseries, schools and colleges linked to any subject, including:

Ofsted requirements

Curriculum & Qualifications

Leadership & Management

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Behaviour

Assessment

Gifted & Talented

Coaching

Whole School Improvement

Educational Resources

Child Protection and Safeguarding

How many people can attend an inset?

We can provide training for 5–500 people depending on the presenter.

Where is this training available?

We are able to provide training throughout the country and most of our trainers are available for international work. It can be held in your school or a conference room may be hired.

Where do you see Osiris Educational in 5 years time?

I would like Osiris to be the benchmark of great training. If a school has a training need I would like them to immediately think of Osiris and approach us for the answer. We are quality-driven and are not in business to provide mediocre training. I know schools are short of time and money and what they have is too precious to be wasted on training that is not fantastic. Many schools in the country have attended Osiris training and I would like to see them return with new colleagues and hope we will have trained a big majority of schools throughout the country over the next 5 years.

We were very pleased to award St John Bosco Arts College with our ‘Outstanding School Award 2010′. Here is what the press had to say:

CROXTETH SECONDARY WINS TOP SCHOOL AWARD

St John Bosco Arts College has received the “Outstanding School Award 2010″ from leading educational training provider, Osiris Educational.

The Catholic girls school in Croxteth was awarded the prize after receiving Outstanding in their latest Ofsted inspection six weeks ago.

Outstanding School Award 2010

Osiris’ Managing Director, Stephen Cox said, “We awarded St John Bosco our Outstanding School award not just because of their latest Ofsted report but because of the continued training the staff receive. To go from Ofsted’s Satisfactory to Outstanding in six years is quite an achievement and we are proud to have helped them reach this.”

Teachers at the college have been receiving training from Andy Griffith, Director of Motivated and Loving It (MALIT) in association with Osiris Educational for 3 years. The training programme that was delivered is Outstanding Teaching, a modular programme for the whole school.

Head Teacher, Anne Pontifex explained the school took part in the programme to develop school culture and improve staff empowerment and confidence. Mrs Pontifex feels that Outstanding Teaching has helped break down staff resistance about being observed and has massively improved creative teaching across the school. She said, “The training is very motivating and inspiring. It creates a positive ethos amongst staff and helps us all analyse our teaching. We will definitely be carrying on with the programme next year.”

The students also appreciate the programme with one Year 12 student commenting, “Before the programme our lessons were led by the teacher with class discussions and power points. Now we use a technique called ‘the pit’ where we are challenged to think for ourselves with multiple questions. Even 15 minutes after the lesson we are still talking and debating the topic we have just studied.”

The award came just at the right time after the College discovered this week they were no longer receiving the £20m government grant for a rebuild in 2013.

For more information on the programme or Osiris please contact Katie Grainger or Paula Coppins on 01790 755783

To raise the standards of teaching in the cohort by one sustainable level. Satisfactory teaching becomes good, good becomes Outstanding.

Aim: To raise the standards of teaching in the cohort by one sustainable level. Satisfactory teaching becomes good, good becomes Outstanding.

Wider Outcomes: -

Raise standards of learning

Increase teacher confidence

Improve pupil enjoyment and engagement in lessons

Leave a sustainable impact across the school

What is the Outstanding Teaching Training Intervention?

It is the use of training methods to provide a sustained improvement in teacher performance. Typically, a cohort of 10 teachers is taken through the programme for a duration of between one and two terms.

When: All training takes place during the school day and is carefully planned with you to minimise disruption and cover requirements.

How: We focus on individual teacher performance through intense input of practical ideas and by ensuring changes in classroom practice are fully implemented.

What is different about this approach?

They will focus only on teacher development and not wider strategic and cultural issues.

The model will work as follows: -

10/5 Teachers within each school would be invited to attend the training by the senior management team.

Meet and agree protocol and Service Level Agreements. A benchmark would then be set for those teachers in terms of their present performance.

The training intervention strategy programme will run.

Module Training

Lesson Observations and videoing

Feedback

Celebrating and sharing of outcomes

The new cohort will then begin

The Training Intervention Strategy is made up of 6 modules:-(under review)

Questioning an the Art of Challenge

Engaging Learners

Outstanding by Design

Outstanding by Ownership

Outstanding by Feedback

Coaching
