Presenter & auther Sue Palmer

Sue Palmer, a former head teacher, has written more than 250 books and educational TV programmes on aspects of literacy and was a contributor to several National Literacy Strategy (NLS) training packages, including co-authorship of the ‘Grammar for Writing’ training. She also writes regularly in the Times Educational Supplement and Child Education, provides in-service courses in schools, universities and LEAs throughout the UK, and acts as a literacy consultant to the NLS, many educational publishers and the BBC.

Recent publications include ‘Literacy What Works’, co-written with Pie Corbett for Nelson Thornes; ‘How to teach cross-curricular literacy for Key Stages 1 and 2’, ‘Speaking frames for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6’ (both David Fulton); and the hugely popular ‘Skeleton poster books’ and ‘OHTs’ (TTS).  Working with Early Years consultant Ros Bayley, Sue’s most recent book is ‘Foundations of Literacy’ (Network Press), a pre-literacy curriculum for children aged 3-6, based on UK and European best practice. She is also helping develop a BBC radio series and BBC Cbeebies television series linked to this material.

Sue is a Master in Education, a fellow of both the Royal Society of Arts and the English Association, a member of the steering group of ‘Talk To Your Baby’, reading ambassador for ‘Reading is Fundamental’ (both run by the National Literacy Trust), and a trustee of both the English Association and Pictorial Charts Educational Trust. She is about to join the Educational Writers’ Group committee at the Society of Authors.
