New Leadership Demands

A practical, school focused approach, rooted in the new world of school leadership

Who is this course for?

New Leadership Demands consists of two one-day courses, which are designed for all headteachers.

Why should I attend these courses?

As the presenter Professor John West-Burnham has said: "In the next four to five years, schools will face unprecedented change. Many of the fundamental assumptions about how schools work, the nature of the curriculum, the focus for learning and teaching, and relationships between schools will change. This will have to be achieved in a time of economic recession and a continuing, unrelenting focus on performance. The demand for effective and sustainable leadership has never been greater."

Can you tell me more about each day's content?

Day 1 is an opportunity for you to spend time exploring and coming to terms with a rapidly changing leadership environment. Develop a shared understanding of the implications of the emerging trends and initiatives, and design appropriate responses to them. Learn from current research about effective leadership to create a clear personal 'map' of the issues and implications in being a high performance school leader in a complex and challenging environment.

Day 2 finds the emphasis switched from being an effective school leader to developing the personal qualities needed to sustain success, enjoy work and maintain balance in every dimension of life. Focus on personal learning and development, motivation and moral purpose, and developing personal resilience.

Day 1 will provide school-based work to be taken into Day 2 to complete your development, but each day can be taken independently.

Can you tell me about Professor John West-Burnham (the course presenter)?
