Although our school was improving its outcomes, it lacked a coherent approach to teaching and learning. We had tried a number of initiatives but they were rather piecemeal and weren't embedded across the school. The evidence of Visible Learning is clear - results have continued to improve and our school has climbed from outside the top 10 to second out of over 50 schools in Staffordshire for GCSE progress. The great thing about our journey is that we never arrive! It is ongoing because we continue to evaluate our practice and we can continually see ways to improve further, by always seeking to develop what works best, rather than simply what works.
We needed a vehicle or framework to explore, harness and develop best practice for both pupils' learning and teachers' teaching. After embedding Visible Learning practices and processes, pupils are now very articulate about their learning, how they learn and what is effective, while teachers are clear about the terminology and use of learning tools, including success criteria.
